“They are. Or I should say was in the case of my much lamented grandmother. They’d have sorted out anyone who needed to be dealt with—if the pair of them had been at Hastings, England would never have turned Norman.”

“They sound rather frightening. How could such a dam have produced such an offspring?” Jimmy shook his head in mock wonder.

“Oh, the gauntlet of iron hides a fist of silk. They’d not have used brute force, either of them. Charm and persuasion and an absolute sense of being right. It’s a potent combination to confront anyone with.”

“But one of the points about Lady M. is surely…” Caddon lowered his voice as there were tea ladies in the vicinity, “…her sex appeal. She exerts a special power over her husband that must be associated with their carnal relations.”

Jimmy raised an eyebrow, caught Jonty’s eye. Both men were shocked, not by what was said—it was what any sensible scholar might say of the Bard’s work—but in its implications towards the Stewart females. And towards the two people who’d just been acting the scene.

Caddon immediately grasped his faux pas and seemed to regret it. “Oh I say, I didn’t mean to imply that your mother… I mean, steady on…” The man’s face turned a more magnificent shade of crimson than even Orlando could manage.

Jonty laughed. “No offence intended so none taken, Mr. Caddon. And you’re quite right in your judgment on Lady M. She uses her feminine wiles to every purpose. That’s why an asexual woman in the part, all aggression or nobility or ambition, leaves me feeling something is lacking. She has to attract her husband and use that fact to manipulate him. Wouldn’t you agree, Jimmy? Jimmy?”

“Sorry.” The director seemed taken aback. “I was miles away, thinking about costumes.”

Jonty wasn’t sure that was the truth. By accident they’d strayed onto dangerous ground again, just as they’d done when lost in character on the stage. There’d been a sexual tension present then, even if it had manifested itself in nothing more than an excellent performance. He wondered exactly where Jimmy’s thoughts had strayed.

Jonty suddenly felt the need to be doing something, anything, that could keep his brain distracted. “I think I should find that porter and go through his part a further time.”

“Indeed.” Jimmy looked about for the player in question, a local sprig of nobility whose father had talked the director into taking him on, giving the lad something productive to do for a few weeks. “And could you look at some of these costumes. They’ve at last arrived and I’m concerned about their authenticity. Looks more like Drury Lane than Glamis.”

“My pleasure. If we don’t catch each other later, I’ll see you again on Monday afternoon?”

Jimmy nodded. “We need to get things moving in earnest then. Only a week to the dress rehearsal and then the first night a week on Monday.” He sighed. “Well, at least they all know the words even if they don’t know how to say them.
